Julie Hurlock – December Member of the Month!

Congratulations to Julie Hurlock, CrossFit Relentless’s December, 2018 member of the month! In addition to being a CrossFit athlete, Julie is a yogi and used to be a cardio kickboxing instructor!

Julie Hurlock - December Member of the Month

1. What are your hobbies/interests/talents outside of CrossFit?

This was a tough question as CrossFit seems to dominate my life at the moment…but I do enjoy walking my pit bull and Lhasa Cocker, running (fast!), yoga, spending time with my friends and family, and occasionally a good book.

2. Share with us one thing that most people do NOT know about you?

I was recently called out on being an “open book” and eventually telling most people anything and everything about myself.  However, I don’t think many people know that I was a Cardio Kickboxing Instructor…in my younger and more naive days.

3. How long have you been with us at CFR?

About a year and a half!

4. Take us back to your first week here. How did you feel? Remember the workout?

I actually remember being “coaxed” into trying CrossFit…not really sure I was going to like it!  After one on-ramp class, I was hooked.  The first week (and many more to follow) I remember feeling completely awesome and insecure at the same time.  There were always moves I could do, which allowed me to feel the confidence I needed to keep coming back…but the barbell work was so foreign to me.  I remember feeling a sense of calm with the many scaling options – yet challenged to progress with the support of all the fabulous coaches.

I actually do remember the workout of the very first post on-ramp class! It was a team WOD…and I worked with Christina (how ironic!?) tons of ring dips, hollow rocks and skiing.  I remember feeling nervous about working with a team that seemed to know exactly what to do (and do it well!!) but through the cheering and encouragement, I walked away feeling like I was actually part of something big.

5. What moment/achievement are you most proud of at CFR?

So many to choose from!! My first unassisted pull-up was pretty amazing. Hitting a 20 lb PR for my Clean was also ridiculous!!  It is easy to feel “proud” almost every day I hit CFR.  With coaches and athletes that encourage and support me through every single WOD, it’s hard NOT to give myself a pat on the back for surviving another class!! 🙂

6. Design your perfect workout.

For Time:
400m Run
21 Wallballs
400m Run
15 Push-ups
400m Run
9 Pull-ups
400m Run

7. What is your least favorite movement?

Snatch or assault bike.  Someday I may like them.
Editor’s note: Snatch, maybe. Assault bike, no one ever likes that.

8. Summarize your lifestyle in 5 words or less.

Just keep swimming.

9. Have you experienced any changes in your lifestyle now that you have been a CrossFit athlete?

There have been so many changes in my lifestyle.   The impact on my diet has been the most noticeable.  I’ve begun to realize what food does for me.  Throughout my life I have tried to “cut this” or “cut that” or try this new “fad” diet.  Since becoming a CrossFit athlete, I am finally beginning to understand exactly what my body NEEDS to perform.   I am no expert in nutrition, but I can now tell when I didn’t eat enough carbs or skimped on the protein.

10. What advice to you have for anyone who is thinking about joining or who has recently joined?

As generic as I may sound, CrossFit will change your life.  You will begin to see and feel results almost right away.  It is an amazing way to keep track of your fitness goals.  The strength that you develop will surprise and motivate you to constantly bring it to the next level!

It is a certain flavor Kool-aid that you won’t be able to get enough of!!
