Gary Costa - August Member of the Month

1)      What are your hobbies/interest/talents outside of CrossFit?

When I’m not out with friends or spending time with family, I’ve been teaching myself how to play the guitar. I try to learn some new songs here and there when I get some down time. I also take voice lessons a couple times a month and although I’m not great at singing, I do occasionally enjoy a good karaoke night!

2)      Share with us one thing that most people do NOT know about you?

In college I was part of a Hip-Hop dance group that competed regionally against other schools. I also used to practice breakdancing, but it’s been a few years so I’m a little rusty!

3)      How long have you been with us at CFR?

I joined in May 2017.

4)      Take us back to your first week here. How did you feel? Remember the workout?

My first week I was nervous but excited. Everyone was really welcoming, so I quickly felt at ease. My first workout was:

5 Minute AMRAP of:
10 Power Snatches
10 Box Jumps
Rest for 2 Minutes
5 Minute AMRAP of:
10 Overhead Squats
10 Box Jumps

It was rough. I barely got any depth on the overhead squats and I failed a few box jumps. I felt great when it was over though!

5)      What moment/achievement are you most proud of at CFR?

I’m most proud of getting Kipping Pull-Ups, Kipping Hand Stand Push-Ups and Toes to Bar. For a while I couldn’t do any of the movements, but then they all clicked and it suddenly felt natural.

6)      Design your perfect workout?

4 Rounds for Time:
7 Handstand Push-ups
14 Kipping Pull-ups
21 Double Unders

7)      What is your least favorite movement?

My least favorite movement would be snatches, but they’ve slowly been getting better with practice.

8)      Summarize your lifestyle in 5 words or less.

Work hard. Dream big.

9)      Have you experienced any changes in your lifestyle now that you have been a CrossFit athlete?

Before CrossFit I wouldn’t get out of bed until 8AM. Now my alarm is set for 6AM, I chug my coffee and I’m out the door. I’m more energized in the morning after working out. I feel accomplished and ready to tackle the day. I’ve also become more conscious of what I eat and drink. I can really feel a difference in my body working out a day after I’ve eaten poorly versus a day where I’ve eaten clean.

10)   What advice do you have for anyone who is thinking about joining or who has recently joined?

Do it! Fight through the first few WODs and stick with it. Do your best and don’t compare yourself to other members. Soon you will begin to see results and then you will be hooked!
