Greetings Relentless Family!
We’re 1 WEEK away from the start of the 2019 CFR Intramural Open! I hope you’re all as excited as I am! The teams have been finalized (42 people per team), the captains are organizing team swag and psyching people up, and our coaching staff and competitors have all passed the judges course so that we can conduct Friday Night Lights smoothly. Just to refresh your memory, our teams are:
Booty and the Beast – Captain: Marri Fairbanks, Co-Captain: Emy McGaffin (honorary co-captain was Jeff Bellitti during the recruiting)
Chalk Dirty to Me – Captain: Rob Alarcon, Co-Captain: Mike Ducharme
Heart and Swole – Captain: Ana Calciano, Co-Captain: Erica Newfang
Jacked in the Box – Captain: John Humphrey, Co-Captain: Tricia Tardif
How does the Open work? Well, CrossFit HQ will release the workouts on Thursday night at 8PM, at which point I will update Wodify with the workout. All classes will perform the Open WOD on Friday. Starting at 5pm, formal classes shall end, and we will run continuous heats. Those who perform the WOD earlier in the day are encouraged to come back at night to cheer on their teammates. This is the essence of Friday Night Lights.
To get credit for your team, the workout must be judged, and I must receive a copy of your scorecard. If you don’t make it in on Friday, you may perform the WOD by Monday at 8pm and it will still count for your team, provided that it’s judged, and I see the scorecard. Finally, if you’re traveling, you may drop in to another gym and perform the WOD. To get credit for it, again, have it judged, and send me a picture of your scorecard. Now, on to the scoring:
Single Opportunity Points:
Sign up for the CrossFit Open through the Games Site – 2 points
If you’re going to pay for something, you’re more likely going to commit to it. We’re rewarding that. You must sign up by the end of the first Friday Night Lights on Friday, 2/22 to get these points.
Complete and log all 5 workouts through the Games Site – 5 points
It’s one thing to sign up, it’s another partake each week and remember to log your scores by the Monday 8pm deadline. Your commitment to the Open earns your team points.
Best Team Name – 5 Points
To be voted on by the coaches, all of whom are spread amongst the teams to ensure impartiality.
Best Team Uniform – 5 Points
To be voted on by the coaches, all of whom are spread amongst the teams to ensure impartiality.
Weekly Opportunity Points:
Complete the WOD, judged, and leave Coach Erik a copy of the scorecard – 3 points
Our main goal is to have our members push themselves by doing these WODs, rather than focus on the outcome. So, we reward your participation.
Achieve a PR – 7 points
This is what the Open is all about! Each year, we have people get their first muscle up, toes to bar, chest to bar pull-up, and double under. We also have people complete WODs using more challenging scalings than they’ve ever done before, be it a harder variation of a gymnastics movement, or a heavier weight. Achievements such as these deserve to be recognized and rewarded. Point of clarification: if HQ includes a movement that we at CFR have not done before (last year was DB Hang Power Clean and Jerks), this does not constitute a PR. If you do hit a PR, NOTE IT ON YOUR SCORECARD SO I’M AWARE.
Team Spirit – 10 points
The team that shows up en masse, cheers the loudest, and is most decked out in swag each week will be rewarded with a bonus. This is all about community, after all.
Finish 1st in Your Division – 6 points
While participation is the goal, we still want to reward performance. We will be using the same divisions as HQ, which means men’s and women’s scaled and Rx, for all age brackets. In the event of a tie, the available points will be split (e.g. 2-person tie = 3 points per person)
Finish 2nd in Your Division – 4 points
While participation is the goal, we still want to reward performance. We will be using the same divisions as HQ, which means men’s and women’s scaled and Rx, for all age brackets. In the event of a tie, the available points will be split (e.g. 2-person tie = 2 points per person)
Sandbag the WOD to earn a top 2 finish – -10 points
We’re here to push you to achieve things you didn’t think were possible. Sometimes, we forget this when our competitive nature gets the best of us and we go easier than we should in the hopes of winning a division. To discourage this, we will dock your team points if you scale when you shouldn’t.
That’s the scoring breakdown. I will post weekly updates on the blog, complete with the scorecard broken down by both team and division in the interest of transparency. 1 more week!
