Welcome back to the Fitness Edda. I’m Erik Castiglione, owner and head coach of Viking Athletics, and this week we’re tackling five statements in fitness that sound like they cancel each other out — but don’t. Each pair looks like a contradiction on the surface. Once you understand the mechanism underneath, both halves turn out to be true at the same time.
That’s the thing about fitness advice: it rarely contradicts itself. It’s usually two true statements getting compressed into a soundbite that’s missing the context connecting them. Here are the five I hear most often, and the context that makes each one click.
Can You Be Fit and Poorly Conditioned at the Same Time?
Yes — because fitness and conditioning measure two different things. Fitness is your physical potential: VO2 max, anaerobic threshold, resting heart rate, heart rate variability, strength, power, and joint mobility. It’s what your body is capable of on paper. Conditioning is your ability to actually use that potential to meet real-world demands — energy systems development, movement capacity, and the mental game required to keep performing when things get hard and unpredictable.
This is exactly why the fitness world has been buzzing about “hybrid training” — blending strength and endurance work instead of specializing in one. A powerlifter with elite raw strength can be completely gassed carrying groceries up three flights of stairs. A marathoner with a phenomenal VO2 max can get pinned under a barbell they’ve never learned to brace for. Both are fit. Neither is conditioned for the demand in front of them. Conditioning is trained separately, through varied, unpredictable, fatiguing work — not assumed as a side effect of being fit.
Why Does the More You Exercise, the Fewer Calories You Burn?
Because your body gets efficient at whatever you repeat. The first time you run a mile, it costs real energy — your form is inconsistent, your muscles aren’t coordinated for the movement yet, and your body is working harder than it needs to. Run that same mile three times a week for two months, and your body adapts: better movement efficiency, better training adaptations, less wasted energy. The result is that the exact same workout burns fewer calories than it did when you started.
This isn’t a flaw — it’s the entire point of training. Efficiency is a sign of progress. But it means you can’t rely on the same workout to keep producing the same calorie burn indefinitely. That’s where progressive overload comes in: increasing weight, reps, speed, or complexity over time so your body keeps facing a stimulus it hasn’t fully adapted to yet. If your workout feels easier than it did a month ago, that’s not a problem to fix — it’s a signal that it’s time to add more.
Is Programming Different From Workouts?
Yes, and this is the contradiction that quietly explains most people’s lack of progress. A workout is a single session: random, designed to make you tired, focused on calorie burn and challenge. Programming is a sequence of workouts built with intent: organized, progressive, goal-oriented, and tailored to the person doing it.
A workout can absolutely wreck you and still do almost nothing for your long-term goals. Programming is what turns individual sessions into an actual trajectory — toward more strength, better conditioning, or meaningful body composition change. Random workouts, chained together with no plan connecting them, tend to plateau fast because there’s no progressive structure driving continued adaptation. If you’ve been training hard for months without results to show for it, the issue usually isn’t effort. It’s the absence of programming behind the workouts.

Should You Eat as Little as Possible to Gain Weight?
No — and this is where a lot of people sabotage a lean bulk before it starts. Gaining muscle without excess fat requires a slight caloric surplus, not a large one and not none at all. Too small a surplus (or none) gives your body no extra material to build new muscle tissue. Too large a surplus mostly adds body fat, since your body can only build muscle at a limited rate no matter how much extra food is available.
The goal is nutrient partitioning — steering as much of that surplus as possible toward muscle rather than fat. That happens through a modest surplus (usually 200–300 calories above maintenance) combined with consistent strength training and adequate protein, which signals your body to prioritize the muscle it’s actively being asked to build. Eating “as little as possible” doesn’t protect you from fat gain — it just slows or blocks the muscle gain you’re actually there for.
Should You Eat as Much as Possible to Lose Weight?
This one sounds backward, but the key is the distinction between fat loss and weight loss. The scale doesn’t distinguish between fat, muscle, and water — it just reports total mass. If you cut calories too aggressively, you’ll lose weight, but a meaningful chunk of it comes from muscle, not fat. Eating enough — particularly enough protein — while in a moderate deficit helps preserve the muscle mass you already have, so more of the weight you lose is actually fat.
Adequate intake also limits hunger cues, which is what keeps a deficit sustainable instead of collapsing into a binge two weeks in, and it helps avoid metabolic adaptation — the way your body slows its own metabolic rate in response to being underfed for too long. Eating “as much as you can” while still holding a deficit isn’t a loophole. It’s what keeps the deficit from working against you. Fitness culture loves a clean, contradictory-sounding headline — the truth underneath is almost always more useful, and less dramatic, than the headline itself.
